Family Science Night

It was 3rd grade family science night at school and since I am a scientist at heart I convinced Damon that he should take Noah. I like cultivating young scientists. So they went and had a great time. They created chemical reactions using baking soda and vinegar, studied Newton's 3rd law, studied different types of sand and did a little research on acid rain. They both had a really good time, but Noah keeps saying that math is his favorite subject. I must try harder.

Just some random things

So lately I have been hearing a lot of New Kids on the Block songs on the radio. I just about die of laughter every time one of them is played. And it is so terribly sad that I have every one of those stinkin' songs memorized. Since they are on tour again I guess that means I can blow the dust of my tapes and play them as I do fabulous dance moves around the kitchen. Then on Sunday night after the football game Damon was flipping through channels and came across scenes from their tour. It was their Boston show so of course it was huge. They have changed the key of most of their songs, but they still sound the same. They still have the same dance moves. They should probably redo those. They are just so terribly cheesy. The camera would pan the audience and they were all 30 somethings in there. So funny.

Everyone knows I love to read. I really feel like it is the best form of personal relaxation. There is nothing like a good book to rescue you from reality for a little while. I think that is why I end up falling in love with so many fictional characters. Well, I just read this great book with a great, sweet, wonderful story and I wanted to share it with everyone. The story was just so simple and the author isn't to verbose. Anyway... the book is called A Company of Swans and it is by Eva Ibbotson. Go read it. It isn't even very long. 244 pages. If I were really talented and new the right people I would so love to write this into a movie. I would love to see this on the big screen. I know who I would cast as the lead guy, but he is starting to look a little old. Oh well. Enjoy the book.

Pack Meeting

The family went to Noah's pack meeting tonight. I can't remember the last pack meeting I actually attended. It had to have been before I had a say in things so maybe around the age of 10. It wasn't to bad. Noah got his Bobcat award and we were all very proud of him. He is well on his way to becoming the next Eagle Scout. I spent the afternoon sewing by hand all the patches and numbers on his scout shirt. Only one minor needle stab to the thumb and I only had to redo one number that didn't want to stay straight while I was sewing. Not a bad job after 4 years of 4H. Most people don't know that about me. Damon did a great job playing an Indian chief telling a story about the most important duty being to take care of others. All the scouts sat around the campfire while he told it. Every time he said duty he pronounced it very clearly. I think if he hadn't the 8-11 year old boys would have laughed because it would have sounded like "doodee". I kept snickering inside. A good night for all. Stay tuned for family science night.

Field Trip Thursday

Well Field Trip Thursday took us to various place in Poway today. It was so wretchedly hot that I didn't feel like being outside. ( I would never had said that 85* was hot when I was growing up in PHX.) It started with a trip to the orthodontist. Noah is very excited to have orange and black bands on for Halloween. After that we thought we would head off for some yummy cold treats at Baskin Robbins. Can't beat that on a hot day. We all enjoyed our ice cream and yummy milkshakes. Then to end the trip we had to fill up our gas tank at Costco (yea) and pick out new flowers for the front patio at Home Depot. Lily picked purple flowers, Adam picked orange and Noah picked red. No shocker there. My kids our so unoriginal. Hopefully they will get planted before they die. We don't have much luck with keeping things alive in this house. Eventually we will learn.

Scrabbling

Damon and I found ourselves with nothing to do on Wednesday night and nothing on TV to watch so we broke out our Scrabble game and got thinking. He didn't like the way I spelled wager so out came the huge dictionary that my mom gave us a couple of years ago. She was tired of us calling her at 11pm asking her if what we thought were words were indeed actual words. That was during our Boggle phase. Wager was actually spelled correctly. Damon didn't like me using "poo". I was behind by about 20 points and I had just found a place to spell the word "apex" for 57 points which would have won me the game and I was salivating waiting while Damon stared at the board for 10 minutes. Then the meany stole the "e" I was going to use and got 18 points with "hoe", which solidified his lead. He was so happy to win. I let him enjoy the victory because I beat him in everything else. This morning I found him reading the dictionary over breakfast so as to be more prepared for the next time.

Happenings

Well, this is more ranting than raving, but whatever works. I am still pretty happy about the BYU win that occurred on Saturday. 44-0. That's pretty impressive. We spent Sunday afternoon with my parents and my sister and her family. While there she gave me my own set of Prop 8 signs for my front yard. She has already had 6 stolen and her sprinkler head broken. I am worried about what people might think of us having a sign in our front yard or do and I am quite worried about my piano student's parents, but I just had to tell myself that this issue is more important than stepping on people's toes. So if you want a sign in your yard I have extras.

Lily and I had a nice day today. We went to the gym, read books, played and made banana bread. With her in preschool and going to the kid's club at the gym we have not been spending as much time with each other as we used to and I think that is a good thing. We also don't get on each other's nerves. She mixed this whole batch of banana bread all by herself. It was pretty tasty too. Way to go Lily.

Go Cougs!!

What a Saturday. It started nice and early. Damon decided to take Lily and Noah up to St. George to visit his parents. Adam had a soccer game and we were in charge of snacks so we had to stay. So a very quiet Saturday indeed. As soon as we got home from the soccer game we turned on the BYU vs. UCLA football game. What a wonderful game it was. Not only did we win we absolutely ran over the Bruins. 59-0!! What a great day! I always get a little sentimental for BYU when I see the Wasatch Mountains and the "Y". Oh the good old days. Yea Cougars!!

Stephenie Meyer has announced the prmiere of Twilight. It is November 17th in LA. Yippie. Then if you don't know this, she has put all of what she has written on Midnight Sun on her web page do to someone stealing the manuscript and putting it on the web. I read it and it is better than Twilight. Go enjoy.
